Life partners Steven Duncan and Edward Jorczyk are having an ongoing love affair with the sea. Steven has been cruising since he was a child, traveling with his parents on a cruise on Carnival’s Mardi Gras in the mid 1970’s. “The two things I remember most about the trip was the freedom I felt being out on the ocean and being seated at a dining table with Diana Ross’s Wig Dresser”.
Edward’s love of the sea began early in life as a child growing up in Connecticut, sailing the Long Island Sound with his family on their 28’ Luhrs cabin cruiser. Edward admits he now prefers his boats a little bigger, “with concierge-class service, and a world-class spa”.
The sea faring couple lives in San Francisco, “a great sail-away port for cruising” Edward notes. Neither is employed in the travel industry. “We do this for the pure love of cruising. By day Steven works as a Marketing Director for a chain of retail stores and Edward is the Director of Global Technology for a large law firm. GaySailAway.com is a moonlighting job that we both love”.
“For years I’ve been booking sailings over the internet for friends and family”, states Steven. “When I would go to websites looking for information specifically about cruising for gay people. I found very little. Some sites have a few paragraphs on LGBT cruises but there was nothing comprehensive”.
So Steven and Edward have taken the initiative to create a website that will help gay men find a great cruising experience and to help answer questions that are specific to gay men. Questions like, “How to mix into a traditionally straight cruise?”, “Where to meet other gay guys on board?”, “What cruise lines and destinations are gay friendly and deserve my dollars?”, “What to do if I have a medical condition or disability? “, and “Where do I find sex on-board or at shore?”
These are all very important questions and some websites, as well as travel agents, aren’t prepared to provide the answers to gay men’s questions. “One of the problems with working with Travel Agents or Cruise Consolidators is that they tend to push cruises where they get volume based commissions,” states Steven. “There are amazing gay-friendly travel agents on-line who can help you find a great cruise. GaySailAway.com is a place where they can be showcased. Ed and I believe that it’s best to work with travel agents by being prepared, do your homework, and get to know what your choices are before you book your cruise.”
