Gay Sail Away Cruising With A Medical Condition And HIV
RSVP Big Ad Hawaii
CRUISING WITH HIV

Most of the major ports that cruise lines visit regularly do not have restrictions for short-term visitation by passangers with HIV.  Of the ports that do, they do not require specific medical information from the cruise lines on the passengers whom they are carrying.

The main concern that a passenger with HIV should have is what would happen if they become ill or injured while in port. In most instances, they would be transported back to their home country once stabilized. However, while infirmed in a port that is HIV unfriendly, the quality of care for an patient may not be as good or advanced in handling their specific needs as in ports where HIV care is more readily available.

Things to Consider

- Is Bigger Better? Yes! For a peson traveling with a pre-existing medical condition it’s best to choose a larger, more modern ship to cruise on. If emergency medical attention is required, medical facilities ont he newer and larger shipss tend to be larger and better staffed.

- Pack extra medication in case you are held up in a port due to inclement weather or an emergency. Many ports that you visit may not have specific HIV medications available.

- Purchase Travelers Insurance that includes emergency evacuation in case you need to be medically evacuated back to the US for treatment.

- You may choose to boycott ports that are HIV unfriendly.

- Consult your physician with any questions before setting sail.

Cruising with a medical condition may create some obstacles in selecting the right cruise for you, however these obstacles are not unsurpassable. On today’s newer and larger ships the medical facilities are both high tech and professionally staffed. With so many people hitting the high seas, cruise lines are far more equipped to accommodate a medical emergency and most treatments on board. The larger cruise ships are fully stabilized making emergency medical situations easier to perform and many new ships have areas where medical evacuation helicopters can safely land in order to evacuate a sick or injured person to the nearest hospital on land.
