FT. LAUDERDALE-WHERE THE BOYS STILL ARE

Ft. Lauderdale and it's gayest neighborhood Wilton Manors is a premiere destination for the gay traveler. It's a gay little enclave in an otherwise ultra conservative state; that is blessed with white sandy beaches, warm topical breezes, a thriving gay community…and did we mention, beautiful shirtless men.

Once a prominent resort community in the ‘50s and ‘60s. By the ‘70s Ft. Lauderdale  add fallen into hard times, becoming the poor-mans Miami and became a rather unglamorous and tacky beach town. Thankfully the last fifteen years has proved to be a renaissance for the Ft. Lauderdale and a sense of fabulousness and fun has reenergized the city; thanks to the trendy downtown Las Olas Boulevard, a new boardwalk and a strong and visible gay community.

Ft. Lauderdale is not as intensely trendy as it's sister community, South Beach, 30 miles south, but it does possess it's own sense of glamour. The dress code is simple, A&F chic, where flip-flops, muscle tee and cargo shorts are fashion essentials love it!

Ft. Lauderdale is broken up into several burbs and Wilton Manors is the extremely gay neighborhood at the north end. It's very similar to Palm Springs in regards to accommodations with many gay guest houses/hotels, bars and restaurants. But it has it's own flavor and own pace. About fifteen years ago gay pioneers (driving Miatas and wearing Prada shoes-no visions of wagon trains here) began purchasing older run-down motels and turning them into fun and frisky resorts exclusively for the gay tourist. There is a "resort" or more accurately "guesthouse" for every taste, from over-the-top amenity laden guesthouses with 300 thread count linens and poolside cabanas to frisky clothing optional guesthouse that are one-step up from a bathhouse.

The three primary areas of gay Ft. Lauderdale are Wilton Manors to the north, Victoria Park to the West and Las Olas Boulevard in the center of town. But you will find gay businesses, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and stores scattered all around the city. There is something in Ft. Lauderdale to satisfy all tastes.

The Gayborhoods

WILTON MANOR - How could any gay man not love a city that has a population of 1270% more gay men per capita than the national average?  The Gay Village of Wilton Manor’s is Ft. Lauderdale’s largest gayborhood, ranking 3rd in the nation for it’s percentage of gay residents as a proportion of its total population (Ft. Lauderdale, in it’s entirety ranks, 4th in the nation for metro areas).

Wilton Manors is home to many of Ft. Lauderdale’s gay establishments. The main drag is found on Wilton Dr (NE 4th Ave.) with a large concentration of gay establishments starting at NE20th St. and heading north to N. Dixie Hwy.  It’s an easy walk between many of Wilton Manors’ bars and restaurants including Tropics, Sidelines Sports Bar, Naked Grape Wine Bar, Georgie’s Alibi, Atomic Boom,  New Moon Bar and Rosie’s Bar and Grill, all lined up along the way.

There’s great shopping along the strip with the epicenter being The Shoppes of Wilton Manors which is home to Gay Mart, where you can load up on rainbow-wear and club clothes, Bottoms and Tops, designer men’s fashions, and fun-and-fabulous Ball, where you can find the best swimsuits for your cruise.

VICTORIA PARK - A funky micro-cluster of gay establishments pepper this fabulously retro neighborhood (at the intersection of N. Federal Hwy. and E. Sunride Blvd.).  Noted to be where the established gay residents of Ft. Lauderdale reside the hood hosts a great indie cinema, the Sunrise Cinemas at Gateway. which shows current gay indie cinema (1820 E. Sunrise Blvd., (954) 763-7994), a great little enclave of shops and boutiques just one block east of the theatre, and great gay bed and breakfasts including The Schubert Resort and New Zealand House. The Galleria Mall, home to Nordstrom and other great stores and restaurants, is just a few blocks east on E. Sunrise Blvd.

OAKLAND PARK - This is the northern-most gay area of the Ft. Lauderdale Area. It is home to many strip malls with chain stores and restaurants as well as gay owned establishments. Oakland Park ranks 6th in the nation for it’s percentage of gay residents as a portion of its totoal population. N. Federal Hwy. is the main drag that bisects the city with malls, Target, and other must-have establishments.

Gay Sail Away Ft Lauderdale Bars and Clubs

Sebastian Beach:
The closest gay beach to everything is Sebastian Street Beach. You just might find yourself humming "Where the Boys Are" at this beach. You can find it north of Las Olas Ave on North Atlantic Blvd at Sebastian Street (a block south before the Seabreeze Street and N. Atlantic Ave convergence). North Atlantic Ave. runs parallel to the beach in a northern direction, Seabreeze is one block west running parallel in a southern direction). The gay section is north of the Sebastian Street intersection. There are restaurants and straight bars across and down the street from the beach.

Haulover Beach:
This is Florida's official and state authorized nude beach. It is located about 20 miles south of Ft. Lauderdale, about one mile south of North Miami Drive on A1A (the coastal highway). The gay section is at the north end and is very crowded on weekends. There are parking lots on the west side of A1A with tunnels that go under the highway to the beach. Haulover is along side of the highway and almost visible if not for the hedges. There is a $5.00 parking fee and the northern parking lot is almost directly across from the gay section. There are lifeguards and food services. North Miami is only a few miles away and South Beach is a pleasant 20-30 minute drive south along the coast from Haulover.
